Travel Guide: North India

India’s diverse north is simply spectacular. Bordered by mountains and deserts, the region has retained its unique culture, with countless ancient temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore. Take it from us – this is one adventure story you do not want to miss. Here are our top 5 reasons for visiting the northernmost states of India.

1. Tigers

Guys, there’s tigers. In the wild. And you can Jeep around the jungle spotting them. Do you need any more reasons?! But seriously, the best place to spot these beautiful big cats is around the Jim Corbett National Park – a highly protected conservation area of Uttarakhand at the foot of the Himalayas.

2. The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal has been topping travellers’ bucket lists for decades – and when you’re in the realm of this awe-inspiring mausoleum in Agra in Uttar Pradesh, it’s not hard to see why. Widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet, the grand marble structure still stands perfectly preserved from the 17th century and attracts around 3 million visitors each year through its doors. That is one queue we will happily join!

3. There’s a Pink City

And we mean, everything is pink. In the historic walled city of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, every building and ancient palace are painted various shades of terracotta pink. Even if pink isn’t your colour, you are guaranteed to be amazed by the striking beauty of the Pink City which contrasts to the otherwise arid desert. There are too many highlights to list, but don’t miss the City Palace, the numerous forts that still stand, and Hawa Mahal – the five-storey, fairytale palace that is – you guessed it – entirely pink.

4. Snow-capped peaks and arid deserts

Yep. Both of these. In the same region. The diversity of landscapes you will find in North India is mind-blowing, but most definitely a major part of the appeal of visiting the north. You’ll find freshwater streams and mountains in Himachal Pradesh, dense rainforest and lush green hill stations in Uttarakhand, and the vast, arid Thar Desert which makes up most of the state of Rajasthan.

5. Culture and cuisine

Unlike some parts of India’s over-developed interior, North India has retained much of its unique culture – from ancient temples to local customs and holy traditions that are still thriving. It’s one of the main reasons why the north has gained the attention of travellers who want to experience a real taste of India. And speaking of tastes, North Indian cuisine is out of this world. Rich curries, slow cooked meats and satisfying vegetarian meals are paired with roti, chapati, naan and other flatbreads to soak up the flavours. Take us there.
