The original town was founded in 1551 by an Otomi chief. From 1656 it was baptized as Tequisquiapan, Nahuatl voice that means "Place of waters and tequezquites". For more than three centuries the majority of the population was indigenous, which is reflected in the simple but harmonious architecture of its old buildings. Despite the modernity in which the city lives, the atmosphere of yesteryear, warm, provincial, free of smoke and loud noises, is obvious. A typical picture of Tequisquiapan would include its pristine blue sky, narrow cobbled streets, old buildings with wrought iron windows where pink bougainvilleas rest, buildings of colonial times, squares full of flowers and the slow ringing of bells at dawn. There are also businesses around the kiosks to relax trying a fruit snow or a delicious coffee, typical small town shops, parks, squares and spas.
